Cyclone alert: preparedness is the best defence.

If it is still safe to do so, now is the time to take simple steps around your home that can help minimise damage:

  • Tie down or pack away any loose items on your property such as trampolines and outdoor furniture.
  • Trim trees and branches around your home to help prevent potential damage caused by high winds.
  • Use plastic tarps or waterproof sheets to cover windows and tape up the bottom of glass doors to reduce wind-driven rain entering your home.
  • Pack a kit with essentials like mobile phones and chargers, a battery-powered radio, waterproof torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, food, water, important documents, medications, blankets, clothing and pet essentials.
  • Follow the advice of emergency authorities and stay up to date with official weather warnings and updates.

What you should do if your home has been impacted:

  • Only return to your property when emergency services say it's safe to do so.
  • Take photos or videos of damage to the property and contents to support your insurance claim before cleaning up.
  • You can remove water damaged items from your property such as saturated carpets and soft furnishings but record details for your claim.
  • Keep a record of model or serial numbers of items you are throwing away to help replace them.

If you have been impacted and have a CGU policy, contact the CGU Claims team by calling 13 24 80 or by visiting cgu.com.au/claims to complete an online CGU claim webform.
